A small-sized project I had planned to work on with a coder friend. He got hired and couldn’t work on it, so the game kind of fell off.
…But that doesn’t mean I can’t talk a little bit about it anyway.
Usually when I start a project, I talk a bit about it to my buddies then write what I’d call a Statement of Intent about the game. It’s usually a short word document, detailing the main gameplay parts, some possible variants, some technical details, and so on.
I find this kind of very early GDD actually pretty efficient at getting my point across and carving a very early picture of the game in the reader’s mind. This usually opens up questions, which lead to discussion, and the project is usually on rails thereafter.
